The Griffin PowerMate Bluetooth
The Griffin PowerMate is an input device produced by Griffin Technology. The original PowerMate required a USB port, and a wireless Bluetooth version was introduced in 2014. First released in 2001,[1] it is a multifunction knob, which can be rotated, pressed, and rotated while pressed. These actions can be programmed to invoke specific responses from a range of computer applications, such as changing the volume, or skipping through videos.
A video demonstrating the PowerMate changing the volume on MacOS
The PowerMate is also equipped with a blue LED on the underside, which can be programmed to flash, pulse, or remain illuminated at various intensities in response to input from the attached computer [1].
Example setup[edit]
The PowerMate can be set up such that the clockwise/counter-clockwise rotation of the input device causes scrolling up and down of a web page in a web browser when it is in focus on the desktop, or the system audio volume when it is not. The status LED on the underside of the PowerMate could be set up as an indicator of resource usage, e.g., CPU usage, when the input device is not in use, and when in use the LED could be set to indicate volume level by LED brightness.
The configuration software allows for custom configuration for each software application. A video editing program can use the PowerMate to scroll through the timeline. Or it can be configured to scroll through your browser page history and push to refresh. It would also work well for breakout-style games. By adding 'Key Press' actions, PowerMate can be configured to perform any particular software function for which there is a 'send key' command - i.e., a keyboard shortcut of one or more keys. By setting 'Actions' (e.g., 'Key Press') for 'Triggers' (for example, 'Long Press' or 'Rotate Right'), a user can use PowerMate in place of the keyboard for any command.
System compatibility[edit]
The Griffin PowerMate is officially supported on Mac OS X, Windows XP and Vista. The software also works under Windows 7 and 8 but crashes occasionally. There are Linux drivers but they are unofficial.

Hi,
I have recently bought a Griffin Powermate to use with my Mac Mini 1.5Ghz Solo. I'm using the latest driver (1.6.4) from the www.griffintechnology.com website. The device is plugged in directly to the rear of one of the four of Mac Mini's USB ports.
The device works, however, when I shut down the Mac with the device plugged in, the Mac Mini consistently Kernel Panics and displays the message in multiple languages that I need to hold down the poer button on my Mac to turn it off.
I have tried to emove and re-install the driver several times but without success. Griffin Support tell me and I quote...
'I didn't realize that you had an Intel Solo. Because of the design of the USB drivers on the Intel Solo Mac Mini it won't allow the PowerMate to work correctly. THis is one of the reasons that Apple has discontinued the Solo. You can try it on another computer that isn't a Solo to see.'
I simply don't belive this as I have the device plugged in and partially working with the Contollermate software from http://www.orderedbytes.com/controllermate/ instead without the kernel panics. Surely this proves the flaw is in Griffins driver?

Does anyone else have the powermate working with the Griffin 1.6.4 driver on an Intel Core Solo Mac Mini?
Has anyone successfully found the right building blocks for the controllermate software in order to control the powermate completely. (I will try and contact Controllermate)
This is the first issue I have had with the Mac mini.
Any help/guidance/suggestions welcomed.
Thanks, mewy.
